Wishing Cone New Year Intention Ritual
Wishing cones are a simple, seasonal way to set intentions for the year ahead and to honor the quiet magic of time, growth, and reflection.
Pinecones have long been symbols of renewal, potential, and quiet wisdom across cultures and ages. Naturally designed to protect and eventually release seeds, they represent promise, patience, and the unfolding of new life. The spiral geometry of a pinecone evokes sacred patterns found throughout nature, and in many traditions, it has been linked with inner vision and spiritual insight. In ancient Greece and Rome, pinecones adorned ritual staffs; in Christian art they echo themes of eternal life; and in older cultures they reflected regeneration and deeper consciousness.

What You’ll Need
- Your wishing cone
- The included slips of paper (+ more if you want)
- A pen
- A quiet moment of reflection
Setting Your Wishes
Begin by taking a few moments to ground yourself. You might light a candle or some incense, take a few slow breaths, or simply pause and arrive.
On the slips of paper provided, write your wishes or intentions for the coming year — one per slip, or whatever feels right to you. There’s no need to overthink this; clarity
matters more than perfection.
Roll each slip gently and tuck it between the petals of the pinecone.
When you are finished, you can hang the cone someplace special. After the new year, place the wishing cone somewhere safe and out of the way — a drawer, altar, box, or other resting place — where it can hold your intentions quietly through the year.
Returning at Yule
When the next Yule season arrives, take out your wishing cone and remove the slips of paper.
Read them slowly. Notice what came to pass, what shifted, and what may have unfolded in unexpected ways. Take a moment to bless both the intentions and the past version of yourself who set them.
Releasing the Wishes
Once reviewed, release the slips in a way that feels safe and meaningful to you.
Options include:
- Burning them safely and allowing the ashes to return to the earth
- Burying them in soil or compost
- Tearing them up and returning them to running water
Choose what feels energetically appropriate and accessible for you.
After releasing the old wishes, you may write new intentions for the coming year and repeat the ritual with fresh slips.
Small wishes, like tiny seeds, grow over time.
This ritual honors both the planting and the harvesting; the remembering and the gratitude.
